A night at the cabaret!

I joined a church choir not too long ago, yes, I have started going to church.  In fact, if you’ll allow me a moment of digression, I’m quite enjoying attending church.  It’s a very liberal and inclusive church and the people I sing with are so very welcoming and filled with good vibes.  I’m very happy there and, every Sunday, in spite of being consumed by an overwhelming urge to cry, I sit through church and I pray and yes, sometimes I do cry.

Through this church, I’ve met a number of great people, but one of the most notable friends I have made, is an exceptional singer, Sarah BB.  She mentioned, at rehearsal last week, that she was staring in a Lone Star Lyric cabaret show at Ovations night club and suggested we should check it out.

The theatreI’ve never before seen a cabaret, I had a vague idea of what it was, I was a little nervous, hesitant, but ultimately, my curiosity and love for all things musically theatrical (not to mention the fact I know that Sarah can sing, so it wouldn’t suck).

I’m not sure if this is how they always do it, but the two gals, two guy format worked well and was enjoyable.  They took a turn about, each singing a show-tune, sometimes, one of them sang two songs back-to-back, but it was balanced and beautiful.

The singers are talented, their voices are strong and the songs they chose were delightful! I love musicals, but a number of the songs were totally new to me – but new, didn’t mean boring or dull, I was thoroughly sucked in – I even came home and Youtube-d (yes, Youtube is a verb now) a number of songs from the show, and have been singing them ever since.

The good test of whether it’s an enjoyable night or not, is my other half, if Mr ‘have-no-fun’ enjoys himself at a date night that I choose, that’s a good testament to whether it’s a good event or not.  Col told me in the car on the way home that he’d go back – and he enjoyed the evening – big points for the cabaret!

Things to note:

Tickets are only $15 online if you pre-book, at the door they are $20, buy early, save the fiver!

The theatre is a small, intimate theatre in Rice Village, we got lucky with on-street parking, but there seems to be a lot of parking in that area.

Sit up close to the stage, the singers enjoy the whooping, hollering, clapping and cheering – don’t be stingy with your applause!

The hall itself is pretty ”cool”, take a sweater.

Table-side service is great, however, we paid $2 per glass of diet coke (which was too full of ice, next time I’m going to say ‘no ice’), they don’t do free refills – which kind of sucks for non-drinkers like us!

If Sarah BB is singing – tell her I sent ya and bring all your friends! 😉
