Day 3: High flying tourists!

The third day of our trip started early, cause I went to bed early, I was up at 7am, full of life and ready to go.  I sipped on some OJ and munched a banana while I waited for Col to get up, which wasn’t a very long wait as I’d told him I’d make bacon butties for breakfast – which we greatly enjoyed, while Skyping with Pierce back in Texas!

I love these tape-frames in the eyebrow place!

Amee and I had made appointments to have our eyebrows threaded for 11.30am, so we got the first bus at 10.30am and made it to the Raffles City Mall (two busses and two trains later), right on time!

After the ‘Browhaus’, Amee went on her way back to the apartment (to relieve the babysitter) and Col and I embarked on a major tourist day (once we’d had a curry chip of course! LOL!!)

When we were done with the curry chip lunch (which, was DELICIOUS!) we did some window shopping in the shopping centre, as it was still raining outside and we had to wait-out the weather before we could do the things on our list.

Our first port of call, was a bit of a trek away from the shopping centre.  We walked to the Singapore Flyer (the big wheel).  En route, we walked past a big chunk of the F1 track, so Col (like a kid at Christmas), took a billion pictures as we walked.

Before we got on ‘The Wheel’, we got some gelato to enjoy, three flavours – green apple, Belgian chocolate and macadamia nut and caramel.  Ok, it was expensive, as Gelato goes, but it was delicious – and a welcome relief from the scorching, sticky heat!

yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

The Singapore Flyer is the tallest ‘ferris’ wheel in the world, standing 98ft taller than the London Eye.  A complete rotation takes around 40 minutes and you get the most breathtaking 360 views of the Island nation of Singapore.

I think it’s interesting to note, that when it first started rotating, the wheel turned in a counter clockwise direction – but was changed under the advisement of a Feng Shui master!

It was here, Col bought me Alonso the hippo!

After the wheel, we walked a little more (the sun was out by this stage, and we’d not brought suncream with us – oopsy!) to the MRT station and after a short two-train journey, we got to the cable car building!

I was seriously excited about this part of our touristing (yes, touristing is a word now!)

Cable cars to-ing and fro-ing!

These cable cars were built in 1974, they were the first aerial ropeway system to span a harbour and they take you from Mt Faber in Singapore, over to Sentosa Island.

Admiring Singapore!

The views were breathtaking, I really loved the trip across, it was quicker than I thought it’d be, but plenty of time to get some cracking pictures and a great aerial view of both Singapore and Sentosa.

Happy Las!

I would ride that cable car every day, if I could – I really loved it!

Once you disembark from the cable car, the Sky Tower is right in front of you (this was also on our to-do list and we had tickets from the groupon!) It has a height of 110 metres above ground, about 36 floors high, and 131 metres above sea level where you can view the entire length of Singapore’s skyline and a panoramic view of the island.

Sky tower

It was less than a 10 minute trip to the top and back down, and, although it gave you a great 360 view of both Singapore and Sentosa, we got views just as good or better views from the Flyer and the Cable Car.

Pretty ships viewed from the sky!

Once we were done with the Sky Tower, we tried, and tried, and tried, to find a wireless internet connection.  Our plan was to use WiFi, get Amee’s phone number from my Gmail and call her from a pay phone and arrange to meet up with her.  We’d tried at various points throughout the day to find a WiFi network – to no avail.  Sentosa was no different, everyone we asked pointed us a few hundred yards down the street, ‘it’s down there’, we tried for an hour.

No WiFi.

Eventually, I gave up and texted my friend at home, I asked her to ‘hack’ in to my email, find the email from Amee, text me the phone number and we’d find a payphone to use.

She thankfully, was available, and got me the number pretty darn quickly, however, no friggin’ payphones – I swear, you can’t write this crap!!!

So, we gave up and decided it was time to try my mobile (eek! I know, my bill is gonna be extortionate!!) We got through, but got cut off.  Thankfully Colin S. called us back and thankfully they weren’t too worried about us (we’d been out of contact for most of the day!)

We ate dinner in a little restaurant that we’d seen the night before, Ruyi.  I got chicken curry (yes, I’m sure you’re amazed!) and Col had a noodle dish – it was cheap (under S$20 for both of us!) and it was tasty – I was so glad we tried it!

After dinner, we went to a little bakery we’d spotted, also the night before, ‘Bread Talk’ to pick up something for dessert.

Smart Alecks
Dice!!

We got three dice (with a variety of filling) and a long thin pastry filled with custard.  It’s a strange kind of cafe, they don’t let you eat on-site, yet they’re connected to a place that sells stuff and has chairs.  Really odd!

We ended up eating our treats upstairs at a coffee house.  Col picked up a coffee and we sat outside on their tables and chairs, I enjoyed the custard filled thingy, but the dice were disappointing!

From there, it was homeward-bound, we decided that a Taxi would be the quickest way home, however, we were mistaken! The taxi had to drive us back to Singapore, u-turn and drive back to the Island – seriously the lack of common sense and sensible design over here is insane!!!

Col said to the taxi driver that he could drop us off ‘here’, which was a good half mile or more walk from where we wanted to be, but it was a gorgeous night, so it wasn’t too bad at all! I managed to stay up til 10.30pm that night – a good two hours later than the previous night, so I definitely made progress on the jetlag front!

Happy tourists!

  1. I should have told you about the telephones – as all internal calls within Singapore are free, they don’t have pay phones – you just walk into a shop or anywhere with a land line and ask if you can please borrow theirs! Sorry, I should have said!

    1. We were on Sentosa and we asked the information desk if we could use their phone (and another place, I cant remember what it was called) and they both said no!
