Friday 13th was anything but bad luck for me, it was a get-together of ”the gang”, otherwise referred to as, (among other things) the not-so-Secret 7 (when Natalie and Jamie can’t come along, or the Scooby Gang when they can) at Magz and Sam’s.
So, we’re sitting around the table, ready to eat the delicious curry that Magz had made from her Christmas present, Gordon Ramsay’s curry book, and out of the blue, Magz asks Luke to be little Eve’s Godfather, and me, yes, your humble blogger, to be Godmother.
I’d never expect to be called upon to look after Eve if something ever happened to the Maddens, there are any number of family members on the list of guardians ahead of us. However, to me, being a Godparent is about something a lot bigger than the morbid task of being called upon in a time of absolute devastation.
For me, (and remember, I’ve only been a Godmother for about a week now), the responsibility of being a Godmother is a life-long commitment. It’s about taking an interest in Eve’s upbringing and personal development, it’s about providing advice, guidance and teaching her things that her parents wouldn’t necessarily teach her 😉 to be there for her if ever she needs me and to always have a bed for her to come and visit, wherever we end up!
We’ve decided that Uncle Luke will be responsible for her sense of style, if you’ve ever seen him, you’ll understand. And, if you haven’t, the term ‘sharp’ is an understatement! I’ll teach her to love hockey, and, to talk like she’s from Northern Ireland, solely to annoy her daddy!
I don’t think I’ve ever been caught more off guard, more overwhelmed by a surge of emotion, or more honoured to be asked something so huge. Though I am a little intimidated about the role I’ve accepted, can you believe I’m to play an influential part in a little person’s life? Like I said, I’m very honoured, but lets face it, I’m a few sandwiches short of a picnic!
I’m thrilled to have been asked and I’ll most definitely rise to the challenge, I’m already trying to think of fun ways to record her time as a little person, so I can share it with her when she gets older and, for now, I’ll just settle for taking an insane number of pictures of her every time I’m in her company 🙂
One quite important part of being a Godparent is also the faith side of things too. That’s kind of why they’re called “God parents” and not “alternative parent types”!! 😉
I can’t think of a better person for them to have picked, however!
True, though Magz and Sam aren’t overly religious, so I won’t be too preachy to her. I know how scared I was when I was preached to as a child! Alternative parent type, that sounds pretty much spot on to describe me! LOL!!!
Thanks 🙂 I’m really touched to have been asked and I take the role very seriously indeed!
Faith is more important than religion ‘cos faith is about what you actually believe. Religion is just how you show it off to the world. I know you won’t preach, but I hope you’ll be able to share the awesomeness that is creation and evolution with her!
That I can most definitely do!!! 😀
