It’ll come as no surprise to many of y’all that I’m a hugely ‘right-brained’ kinda gal. Artistic, creative, musical, with a strong imagination – also known as the ‘artsy fartsy’ part of the brain. Music, drama, baking, knitting/crocheting, the odd group art class – it’s almost like I’m entirely right brained! LOL!
When I came to Pune, it wasn’t long before I happened-upon a local art group that does incredibly regular (weekly, in multiple locations across the city) classes. Two-hour (or sometimes three-hour) classes, with a passionate, talented and lovely lady called Deb, her motto is ‘Creativity is contagious, spread it around’. You don’t need any prior experience with painting, you could never before have picked up a brush, and you could still come and create a masterpiece to hang on your wall.
By the time I finally got around to writing this? I’ve been four times, and I’ve got my fifth session booked. My masterpieces are currently sitting on the headboard of my bed (that was bought at Big Sky Bunks) in the bedroom, I’m trying to decide which wall to hang them on in the house. The more I stare at them, and the more I paint, the less focussed on my ‘mistakes’, or where I could improve, I become. The less ‘in my head’ I seem to be and the more I just seem to give in to the creative process – which is hard for me, because while I’m all ‘right brained’, I’m still an organisational freak, set myself incredibly high standards and get pissed at myself if I don’t reach them.

What did Deb not mention in her sales pitch that you get?
- Oftentimes covered in paint. Typically through your own stupidity and clumsiness, not cause Deb just goes around spraying paint at people.
- The two places I’ve been I’ve gotten a drink or an ice cream with my cover fee – bring snacks if you’re so inclined going to the ice cream place, they only do ice cream!
- Usually giggles, good company, we go around the room and say ‘Hi my name is X, and I’m from Y’ – it’s fun to chat to other people from around the city.
